What is AI automation?
AI automation means using AI for the steps of an automated business process that need reading or judgement. Examples are sorting incoming emails, pulling details out of invoices and drafting replies. The other steps follow fixed rules, as in any automation: when this arrives, look that up, send it there. A person designs the steps in advance, whereas an AI agent chooses its own steps.
Why it matters for a business
Section titled “Why it matters for a business”Much of the AI doing real work inside businesses looks like this rather than like an autonomous agent. It is predictable because the path is fixed, and each AI step can be checked on its own. The good candidates are tasks that happen often, are made of words, and where an approximately right answer is still useful, with a person or a software check on anything costly to get wrong. Automation platforms such as Zapier, Make and n8n let whoever owns a workflow set this up through configuration rather than code.
