What is a golden dataset?

A golden dataset is a fixed set of real examples with verified correct answers, used to test how accurately an AI system does a job. In a business it is usually built from past work, such as support tickets already answered or invoices already checked. The AI is run on these examples and its answers are compared with the known ones. It is also called a test set or an evaluation set.

Which cases go in matters more than how many. A useful set covers the kinds of input the work actually contains: mostly ordinary ones, plus the awkward cases people remember, such as the scanned invoice or the customer with no history. 20 to 30 well-chosen cases, read by someone who knows the work, show where an AI system’s wrong answers cluster. Re-run after every prompt edit or model change, and grown with cases that go wrong in real use, the set turns “the new version seems fine” into a comparison.
